New Zealand, known as Aotearoa by the Māori, is situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, southeast of Australia. The country is made up of two main islands—the North Island and the South Island—as well as several smaller ones, such as Stewart Island. Wellington is the capital, while Auckland is the largest city, home to around 1.5 million people. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers.
